What Qualifications Do You Need For Your Captains License ?
WHETHER OR NOT YOU GET YOUR LICENSE EVERY BOATER SHOULD TAKE A BOATING SAFETY COURSE.
EVEN IF YOU HAVE BEEN AROUND BOATS ALL YOUR LIFE. THE RULES OF THE ROAD CHANGE
FREQUENTLY AND IF YOU DRIVE A BOAT YOU ARE REQUIRED TO KNOW THEM CAPTAINS LICENSE
OR NOT.
There are few terms you need to be familiar with first.
Sea Time or (days on the water) this
means documentable time on a vessel.
In most cases this goes either for a lifetime or from
the age of fourteen.
The term "six pack" refers to those licenses that limit you to carrying six or fewer
passengers for hire.
There are few things you need to know BEFORE considering getting
your license that NO OTHER web site will tell you:
If you are a pleasure boater who wishes to get your license just in effort to run a
few charters a year with your own boat. Understand that in many cases once you
obtain your captains license your insurance rates may go up EVEN if you never
run a charter because your insurance agents will
tell you that you have the ABILITY to do so.
UNDERSTAND THAT LIABILITY COMES WITH THE LICENSE. YOU WILL BE HELD TO HIGHER STANDARDS.
- You need to be able to pass a drug test.
- You should not have any felonies ( There is talk that older felonies depending on
the nature of the felony's are not at issue). The standard is free of felonies
for the last three to ten years depending on the severity.
- You need Sea Time - Depending on the license you apply for.
- You must pass all four sections of the exam.
- You must have a basic physical done within the last year. You must have 20/200
vision minimum.
- You must have CPR, First Aide in the last year.
- Proof of US Citizenship.
- For ANY license you need a minimum of 360 documentable days on the water.

What Types of Captains License Should You Apply For ?
Below are the various types of licenses you may apply for.
You should apply for the highest grade license as you can qualify
for. Military time on a vessel is applicable.
A day to the US Coast Guard is 4 hours. You must be able to document these
days on the Sea Service Form. That means that either the owner or captain
of the vessel that you are claiming experience on must sign the Sea Service
Form WITH the registration number of the vessel.
You may use your own vessel and sign yourself however, you must have the original
registration information for your vessel.
If you leave at 7 A.M. in the morning and return at 10 P.M. You have
been on the vessel for over eight hours however, that is still one day
to the Coast Guard because it was within the same day. If you
leave at 7 P.M. and return at 7 A.M you have done twelve hours in a 2 day period
so that one trip would count for two days.
OPERATOR OF UN INSPECTED PASSENGER VESSELS INLAND
(6 passengers or less)
- You must be 18 years old
- 360 days of experience on a vessel.
- 90 days Of the 360 days on ocean or near coastal waters or it may be
limited to Inland license.
Standard 6 Pack License will be limited to vessels of less than
100 gross tons and limited to near coastal waters not more than 100
miles offshore.
The Inland 6 Pack license limits you to the area INSIDE the demarcation line. This means that
you are unable to charter into the Gulf , or Oceans. The demarcation line usually prevents
you from going through or beyond most bridges leading to the Gulf Of Mexico or Oceans.
OPERATOR OF UN INSPECTED PASSENGER VESSELS NEAR COASTAL
(Inland and offshore up to 100
miles) (6 passengers or less)
- 360 days total boating experience.
- 90 of those days must be in the last 3 years.
- 90 days of the 360 days must be in Near Coastal waters (offshore).
- Minimum age is 18.
