Ft. Desoto

Information

This family had been to Fort Desoto before but Fort Desoto is large and they wanted to be able to spend the day and see everything. They really wanted to see if they could find those cool spots with lots of marine life.

Ft. Desoto is located on Mullet Key at the tip of the Pinellas Bay way. Ft. Desoto is the site of 1898 Fort. It host things like 6" Rapid Fire Armstrong rifle that was first installed on nearby Egmont Key in 1898. It was moved to Ft. DeSoto in 1982 and weighs 17 tons. This gun was loaded with 13 1/4 lbs. of powder and could shoot a 100 lb. projectile over 10,000 yards (5.68 miles).

Ft. Desoto was designed by Gen. Robert E. Lee - Capt. Aquatic's great great uncle.

Secret Spots:

As you drive into Ft. Desoto, you will see a water tower on your right. Look to your right and you will see directly across from the water tower a place that you can park your car off to the side of the road. There will also be little inlets that you can walk to the water. Walk to one of these inlets and walk in the water down the bush line. Remember to do the stingray shuffle. In late summer and Autumn months you will find a conch bed here with many tiny conchs.

Spot #2

Just up from the water tower mentioned above on the same side of the road you will see little inlets where you can park your car and walk to the water. If you walk around in the water here, you will see little somewhat cylinder shaped creatures on the bottom. They are brown with what appears to be thick hairs coming out. These are sea hairs and a great study for kids, there is a lot more sea life as well.

Spot #3

Driving into Ft. Desoto you will come to a fork in the road where a flag stands. Turn left (or head East) go to the very end where the road curves. Go around the curve till the curve almost ends, then park your car and walk that little stretch of beach. You will find conk egg sacks (long disk shaped objects, white in color that somewhat look like a spinal column). You will also find tons of the dead casing of horseshoe crabs. You can take those home and study them.

Kids Responses

Brett age 12:
Awesome, that fort is so cool you can climb through it and see the guns. I can't wait to go back. The horseshoe crabs were so cool. The egg sacks we saw were cool but really weird.

Scott age 10:
Very cool. I really had a great time. I loved looking at the ammo rooms and climbing the high stairs and seeing out over all the water. It was a blast. I loved looking at the horseshoe crabs and sea squirt things. There was even a dolphin near us, right near shore.

Michael Age 13:
AWESOME... I can't wait to go back. I love walking around on the ruins.

The Mom:
Wow, I live here and I had been a couple of times but since I was taking a bunch of boys with me I thought I would have Capt. Aquatic go. I am sure glad I did. Even though I had been there I had never seen all the things Capt. Aquatic showed us. I think I had more fun than the boys. We even got right up next to a large southern ray. Now , that was neat !
